Yule 2009

Take the athame and hold it point down over the bowl of water.
The blessings of the Goddess be upon this water,
symbol of the west and the element of Water.
May it ever remind us of the endless cauldron waters of rebirth.
Come elements of the west and join us this longest night.

Take the athame and hold it point down over the dish of salt.
The blessings of the God be upon this salt,
symbol of the north and the element of Earth.
May we ever honor the blessed earth that is His body in the physical world.
Come elements of the north and join us this longest night.

With the tip of the athame scoop up a little salt and put it in the bowl of water. Swirl them together gently in a clockwise manner. Hold the bowl high above the alter:
Water and Earth,
Elements of birth.
By touch, purify.
By power, sanctify.

Sprinkle the water/salt in a clockwise manner around the boundary of the circle. When done replace the bowl on the alter.

Take the athame and hold it point down over the candle.
May the blessings of the Goddess be upon this candle,
symbol of the south and the element of Fire.
May we ever honor the sacred fire that dances within us.
Come elements of the south and join us this longest night.

Take the athame and hold it point down over the incense.
May the blessings of the God be upon this incense,
symbol of the east and the element of Air.
May we always listen to the spiritual inspiration that whispers to our souls.
Come elements of the east and join us this longest night.

Light the incense with the candle. Hold the incense high above the alter.
Fire and Air,
Elements so fair.
By touch, purify.
By power, sanctify.

Carry the incense around the boundary of the circle. Return the incense to the alter.

We stand at the threshold between worlds,
in a time that is not a time,
in a place that is not a place,
on a day that is not a day,
before the Veil of Mysteries.
Round and round,
the power has bound,
this circle tonight in Otherworld light.
No evil may enter, no harm befall us.
For this is our will, and so shall it be.
This Circle is cast.

Invocation to the Goddess:
Goddess of Winter, frozen petal,
Hear us this longest night!
To you we celebrate.
Welcome Lady!
Blessed Be!

Invocation to the God:
God of Winter, diminished sun,
Hear us this longest night!
To you we celebrate.
Welcome Lord!
Blessed Be!

Extinguish all lights

Ring The Bell Three Times:

This is the night of Yule, the Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year. Darkness reigns triumphant, yet gives way and changes into light. The breath of all nature is suspended, while within the Mother’s cauldron of the rebirth the Old Crone is transformed again into the fresh Maiden. Completing the circle we all share.

Light the God candle.

The wheel of the year has turned once more,
And the nights have grown longer and colder.
Tonight the darkness begins to retreat,
And light begins its return once again.
As the wheel continues to spin,
The sun returns to us once more.

Even in the darkest hours,
Even in the longest nights,
The spark of light lingered on.
Laying dormant, waiting, ready to return when the time was right.
The darkness will leave us now,
As the sun begins its journey home.

Light the alter candles starting at the outside and working inward chanting:

As the wheel turns,
Light returns.

After all the candles are lit:
The light of the sun has returned to us,
Bringing life and warmth with it.
The shadows will vanish,
And life will continue.
We are blessed by the light of the sun.

Lift the chalice of wine or cider high and say:
We drink this (wine/cider) in praise to the Goddess, created from the fruits of her earth. May you never thirst!

Pass around the chalice and as each person passes the chalice on to the next person say:
May you never thirst!

Lift the plate of rolls or cakes high and say:
We eat these (rolls/cakes) in praise to the Goddess, created from the grains of her earth. May you never hunger!

Pass around the plate and as each person passes the plate on to the next person say:
May you never hunger!

Thanks to the Goddess & God:
Winter Goddess and Winter God,
Thank you for joining us this longest night.
We thank you for this time of introspection.
Go if you must, stay if you will.
Blessed Be!

Closing the Circle:
Our circle is now open,
But always remains unbroken.

Our will heard.
To new beginnings!
To wisdom and inspiration!
Blessed Be!
