Litha 2010

Priestess begins:
“Hand to hand we cast the circle,”
The priestess walks to the next person in the circle and takes the hand to her left.
“In Perfect Love and Perfect Trust.”
They continue around the circle, walking to the next person and as each person clasps the hand to their left they say: (This allows for the circle to be larger than the number of people would normally allow, plus it has a spiral dance feel, and gives room for the battle)
“In Perfect Love and Perfect Trust.”

Priestess, raising her hands, still linked, group follows:
“We consecrate this circle of power to the Goddess and God.
Here may they manifest and bless their children.
This is a time that is not a time,
In a place that is not a place,
On a day that is not a day.
We come now to celebrate Litha!
We stand before the veil of mysteries.
May the Lord and Lady help and protect us on our magical journey.”

Unlink hands.

West Caller, pointing finger/dagger/wand over chalice:
“Great Mother, bless this creature of water to your service.
May we always remember the cauldron waters of rebirth.”

“Great Mother, bless this creature of earth to your service.
May we always remember the blessed earth, its many forms and beings.”

Greeting to the Goddess and God:
“We give greetings to the Goddess of things wild, of trees, of skies and of waters. We do call upon you, lovely Lady, to be here with us and witness our rites. Be with us in our celebrations of the turning of your year.
We give greetings to the God of the wild, of beasts, of vine, of skies and of fire. We do call upon you, gracious Lord, to be here with us and witness our rites. Be with us in our celebrations of the turning of your year.”

Invocation: (written by Uncle Hyena)
“When the soggy Spring has ended,
And the sun is riding high,
And the Summer King’s a father
With no clue he’s soon to die,
Then the people of the Rede
Take a rest from daily toil
To laugh and dance and run bare feet
Through briefly sacred soil.
The May Queen’s now a Mother;
The Yule Queen’s now the Crone;
And last year’s May Queen is reborn
And waits year’s end to claim her own.
The planting is well ended,
And the harvest’s far away;
There’s no war on the horizon
To spoil a poor man’s day.
Spend a moment in the moment
Underneath the summer sky
And dream of endless summer
While the sun is riding high.

Priestess:
“All Hail the Oak King who reigns over the waxing Sun.”

Group, three times:
“All Hail the Oak King!”

Holly king steps forward, and says:
“Your time is over, you are old and past your best. It is time to make way for my youth and strength. For I am your brother, Lord Holly, and my time is now.”

Oak King replies:
“I am the Oak King and I will not step down for you my brother. You seek the crown, then you must first prove yourself, and take it, if you can.”

Battle ensues.
When the Oak King has been defeated, he gives his crown to the Priestess and retreats to the edge of the circle. The Holly King kneels before the Priestess and she crowns him, saying:
“To the victor the crown. This is the Holly King who presides over the waning Sun. He has challenged and fought bravely and he has won. But let everyone remember that Lord Oak is still with us and as the Wheel of the Year surely turns he will once again have his chance.
All Hail the Holly King!”

Group, three times:
“All Hail the Holly King!”

Cakes and Ale:
Lift the chalice of wine or cider high and say:
“We drink this wine in praise to the Goddess, created from the fruits of her earth. May you never thirst!”

Pass around the chalice clockwise saying:

“May you never thirst!”

Lift the plate of rolls or cakes high and say:
“We eat these cakes in praise to the Goddess, created from the grains of her earth. May you never hunger!”

Pass around the plate clockwise saying:
“May you never hunger!”

All face East, East Caller:
“Elements of Air,
Tower of knowledge,
Power of intuition.
We thank you for your presence.
Go if you must, stay if you will.
Merry Meet and Merry Part and Merry Meet Again.”

All face North, North Caller:
“Elements of Earth,
Eternal strength,
Power of life.
We thank you for your presence.
Go if you must, stay if you will.
Merry Meet and Merry Part and Merry Meet Again.”

All face West, West Caller:
“Elements of Water,
Healing river,
Power of mystery.
We thank you for your presence.
Go if you must, stay if you will.
Merry Meet and Merry Part and Merry Meet Again.”

All face South, South Caller:
“Elements of Fire,
Force of will,
Power of creation.
We thank you for your presence.
Go if you must, stay if you will.
Merry Meet and Merry Part and Merry Meet Again.”

All face center, Priestess:
“Our thanks Great Lady, Glorious Lord.
Your presence fills our bodies and souls with its love and wisdom.
We honor you and accept your blessings into our lives.
We bid you farewell as we close our circle but bid you welcome into our lives.
Merry meet and merry part and merry meet again! Blessed Be!”

Join hands. Priestess:
“This is blessed by the Goddess and God. The circle is open yet it ever remains a circle. Around us and through us always flows its magical power. As around us and through us always flow the blessings and love of the Divine. In Perfect Love and Perfect Trust we depart.”

Hands are released starting with the Priestess and going counter-clockwise. As each person releases say:
“In Perfect Love and Perfect Trust.”

(You’ll notice the ritual is pretty short and we didn’t raise any energy. We didn’t have a plan that required raising energy, so it was left out.)
